New Lows For the White House Correspondents Dinner

Horrible - Vulgar - Debased - Crass - Embarrassing

April 30, 2018

For the 2018 White House Correspondents Dinner, held on 4/28/2018 in Washington, D.C., from a sewer somewhere in the country, they found a 32-year-old female with the language of a drunken sailor at his worst (with no offense meant to any drunken sailor anywhere), and lacking any sensitivity or finesse. Her name is Michelle Wolf, and that is the only time I will refer to her by name.

Having heard some of the ruckus about her "entertainment," I looked up the video on YouTube. I would link to it, but I am disgusted that I even watched it myself. It was almost 20 minutes of vulgarity, crass remarks, and debased thinking - definitely not all that 'funny.' If you wish, you can find it yourself.

The definition I found for "crass" says it well:

adjective: crasslacking sensitivity, refinement, or intelligence.
"the crass assumptions that men make about women"
synonyms: stupid, insensitive, mindless, thoughtless, ignorant, witless, oafish, boorish, asinine, coarse, gross, graceless, tasteless, tactless, clumsy, heavy-handed, blundering

If you would like to see and hear some of the depths to which many in this country have devolved, look up this video. It would have been embarrassing to witness this in a dive bar somewhere with a bunch of totally low-life people of questionable morals. But in this context...unthinkable. Yet here it was - in your face!

The president of the White House Correspondent’s Association Margaret Talev issued a statement denouncing the 'entertainer.'

Last night’s program was meant to offer a unifying message about our common commitment to a vigorous and free press while honoring civility, great reporting and scholarship winners, not to divide people. Unfortunately the entertainer’s monologue was not in the spirit of that mission,” the statement reads.

Her "entertainment" for these hundreds of people who live and move in the highest echelons of our country's government, society, and culture was absolutely deplorable and utterly embarrassing! She made fun of President Trump in vile language, and it surely could be argued that he brings some of that on himself. But it doesn't have to be brought back to him - that is a choice depending on one's own morals and self-respect.

But not Vice-President Mike Pence. Nor Ivanka Trump. Nor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who sat quite near this person as she was being bashed. In the video, there was a pan to see Sarah's face, and the look she gave was most telling. One commenter said it looked like Sarah was going to cry. I don't believe so - it looked more to me like she was exercising immaculate self-control in the face of immature debauchery aimed at her, as well as people with whom she serves our country. At least Melania Trump was left out of the attack, for whatever reason.

Even abortion was thrown into the mix, with her saying something like "Don't knock it until you've tried it...you've got to get that little baby out of there." It grieves me deeply that anyone would speak in such a manner about the intentional death of a small, helpless unborn child - she even called it a "baby!" - with such callous and cold disregard.

Comments about all sorts of sexual acts and situations were scattered throughout the talk, lacking all respect for anything at all being sacred in this life. And of course the coarse language, including several F-bombs.

One thing I do believe she got right, concerning President Trump. She said, "You guys are obsessed with Trump...You pretend like you hate him, but I think you love him...I think what no one in this room wants to admit is that Trump has helped all of you..." - to sell books, and papers, and TV time. So that they can keep their mugs in front of the public, and their source of income streaming in!

A telling commentary concerning all of this is surely the comments of true devotees to what this so-called comedienne was dishing out. Many have come out in full support of her "free speech." A number of the late-night "comedians" have shared their support for her. It is the usual bunch who are themselves going deeper and deeper into the disrespectful realm of vitriol that does not deal with intelligence and ideas, but seeks to simply "entertain" with filth and mental pollution. And so many in our country are listening and following them down the hole of filth and disrespect.

Gone are the "old days" it seems, when Don Rickles at his worst did not have to lose his own self-respect, nor his respect for those he made fun of, at the 'roasts' with Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra and the others.

Somehow we need to see this for what it is - it is not really "free speech!" It is self-serving, disgusting sensationalism that gains notoriety for the one speaking, but does nothing for the causes and needs that we have as a people and a nation.
