A Biblical Perspective on Climate Change

February 11, 2019

Climate change is a catchall phrase for environmentalism. Its proponents, increasingly with religious fervor, blame mankind’s activities for an increase in carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere.

Climate change is used as a scare tactic to promote all kinds of progressive social and environmental issues. Politicians use climate change as an excuse to raise taxes (carbon taxes) and gain the support of naïve voters. Environmental warriors use climate change in an attempt to change energy policies and save the planet, while the media blames climate change for any and all weather-related activities.

So how should Christians think about climate change? Let's break this down. Climate change is a big topic with lots of rabbit trails to go down. We will discuss some of them from a Biblical view and others from a common sense scientific point of view.

Climate change from a heavenly perspective

The Bible does not use the term “climate change” (or global warming) at all. However, it does very clearly outline that ultimately mankind is responsible for changes in the earth’s climate but not in the way many suppose. In Genesis, when Adam and Eve sinned against God part of the curse they unleashed was a curse upon the earth. (Genesis 3:17-19). As sin increased, God eventually unleashed a global flood (Genesis chapters 5 through 7). This huge deluge of water destroyed the ancient world and eventually led to the ice age and the world we have today with separate continents.

In Isaiah 24:5-6, the Bible clearly explains the reason for the curse on the earth: “The earth lies defiled under its inhabitants; for they have transgressed the laws, violated the statutes, broken the everlasting covenant. Therefore a curse devours the earth, and its inhabitants suffer for their guilt; therefore the inhabitants of the earth are scorched, and few men are left.”

So the earth was cursed due to mankind’s sin, not cars and modern industrial activities. This, of course, is something unrepentant unbelievers can’t understand and will never accept.

This curse upon planet earth will only be removed once Jesus returns. Paul explains in Romans 8: 19-22 “ For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now.”

When Jesus returns to pronounce judgment on the earth inhabitants, He will wipe out the old earth and create a new heaven and earth. (2 Peter 3:7-12 and Revelation 21:1).

The truth about climate change zealots

Climate change is just the latest in a long line of environmental causes that eco-warriors have pushed in their “we must save mother earth” religious fervor. From an environmental point of view, they believe nature without any humans, is the best most natural solution. Of course, this doesn’t sync with the Bible at all.

The modus operandi of eco-warriors is always the same:

(1) Make outrageous environmental disaster claims based on an unproven scientific hypothesis
(2) Promote mass hysteria by pronouncing an apocalyptic future - “you are all going to die unless you do what we say”
(3) Offer nonsensical advice and solutions to avoid the “pending environmental disaster”
(4) Feed the catastrophic doomsday scenario and solutions to a gullible mass media (who love doomsday stories), politicians and Hollywood celebs. They will do the rest by spreading their newfound views to their followers.
(5) Any environmental news or natural disaster can be co-opted as “proof” of the impending environmental disaster. A bad hurricane must be due to climate change. Heavy snowfalls must be a result of climate change, as must any flood, anywhere.

Now it’s the turn of increasing CO2 levels we are told will destroy the planet unless we turn to 100% clean energy, trade our cars in for electric models or bicycles, and all turn vegetarian. Plus we have to pay big carbon taxes because someone has to pay for all of the above and it sure won’t be the political leaders who want to tax everyone else.

The truth about CO2

CO2 is constantly being released by nature into the atmosphere with differing amounts, in turn, being locked up in the oceans and land vegetation. This is always changing and almost impossible to accurately measure! Yet CO2 is seen as the main villain in climate change today.

Most people if asked have no idea exactly how much CO2 there is in the atmosphere. They assume it must be a large number, well, because that is all the media ever talk about when they promote the latest press release from whatever eco-warrior group is feeding them. The fact is CO2 only makes up 0.03% of the earth's atmosphere. Yes, that’s all! Furthermore, most climate scientists agree that human activity has only contributed a tiny percent of the total. Yet eco-warriors talk about the ppm (parts per million) amounts of CO2 as if they know what they are talking about. They have said for years, an increase in the ppm of CO2 will produce higher temperatures. Yet this hasn’t happened. As higher amounts of CO2 have risen, the earth’s temperature has stayed constant since 1998. Maybe there is something other than the tiny amount of CO2 in the atmosphere responsible for changes in the earth’s climate?

The truth about climate change warming models

Climate scientists love to show climate change models of the future to support their predictions. Yes, there was a slight warming period in the 1990s, but this ended in 1998. All the hockey stick charts so loved by “experts” to prove their points are computer-generated models based on pre-conceived assumptions! In other words, they are not real temperature measurements but forecasts. Just like any long-term weather forecasts, there are thousands of possible outcomes based on the data entered. And just like the TV weather forecasters, we have all watched get our local weather wrong a lot of the time, the so-called “climate change” forecasters get to choose the one model outcome they like. In the case of climate change, they almost always choose the most extreme apocalyptic forecast to support their preconceived hypothesis.

The fact is the coldest temperature ever recorded was in August 2010 in Antarctica at minus 135.8F. This is right in the middle of the warming period we were warned about!  So while some areas of the globe are getting slightly warmer, others are getting colder. There is no universal warming at all.

Many past environmental warnings have been equally wrong. A few past failed predictions include:

(1) Global cooling in the 1970s (didn’t happen).
(2) Mass starvation due to food shortages and famine by the 1990s (didn’t happen).
(3) 80% of all species in the world would be dead and gone between 1970 and 1995 (didn’t happen).
(4) Overpopulation would overwhelm and kill the planet by 2000 (didn’t happen).

There have been many others too, most of which never materialized or were far less extreme than forecasted.

Let's blame people

None of the above has stopped politicians, academics, and eco-zealots from blaming mankind for causing climate change. While human activity may have caused some small rise in CO2 emissions overall the evidence is very flimsy. Two examples where mankind’s industrial activities couldn’t have accounted for two of the biggest swings in global temperatures are, the Medieval Warm Period (950 – 1250 AD) and the Little Ice Age (1300’s – mid-1800’s AD) because both occurred before the industrial revolution. So the only answer is a natural cause, most likely cyclical sun activity and increased volcanic volatility.

The mainstream American education system and climate change

Secular, socialist, and Marxist inspired educators have sold a whole generation of Americans a lie. Climate change is just one of them. Millennials as a group are more inclined to believe in human-caused climate change because this is what they have been told their entire lives.

Make no mistake; the church is not blameless either. Instead of discussing issues like climate change - “well, it's not in the Bible”, they have let others craft and direct public perception. A whole generation of children that grew up in the church has been led astray due to most Christian leaders avoiding hard subjects and too many believers underestimating the dangers Hollywood and the secular educational system was having on their youth.

Politicians and climate change

Most Politicians, no matter what lofty goals they may talk about, have one major primary concern. That is getting elected, and then staying in office. In order to do so, they have to give their base of supporters what they want - the proverbial “feeding red meat to their base.” Those that don’t, tend to not last very long. So in the case of climate change, if politicians think their base see this as a major threat, they will support tackling it, irrespective of the merits of doing so. That’s what is happening in progressive circles right now. In their mind, “saving the planet” is a real issue and by being the most radical proponents they know how this will keep them in the spotlight and get them lots of campaign dollars.

On the whole, politicians are clueless about climate change. They don’t understand science. Luckily for them, they don’t need to. The dumbed down headlines the media push out have done the job for them. That, however, won’t stop them as most like the idea of getting more of your money in the form of carbon taxes.

Carbon taxes

Carbon taxes are based on the idea that human beings are responsible for changes in the world’s climate. And because we caused the rise in CO2, we must be held accountable. Hence. a “carbon tax” to force populations to change their habits to be more eco-minded. Never mind if doing so will likely destroy otherwise perfectly good energy sources and make electricity more expensive.

It’s really just a great excuse for more taxes and less personal freedom. Basically the kind of policy that socialists, communists, and other oppressive forms of government favor. Make no mistake, liberals and their funders want a carbon tax. They won’t stop until they have one. They need more money to pay for their “social programs” and the one world system they want to create.

Conclusion

As believers, we should always seek to understand issues from God’s point of view. Doing so allows us to discern between the true issues and those which are secondly issues sent to obscure our vision. Satan is an expert at deception. The Holy Spirit, however, will always give those who take the time to listen, insight and wisdom to avoid demonic side issues and rabbit trails that fascinate and enslave the world.

Climate change is a secondary issue. Secular humanists will continue to push the climate change agenda, as it’s another way for them to gain control and take away freedom. It will cause hardship for millions through increased taxation and economic distress. This is the heart of the so-called “New Green Deal.”

The great commission is still to be the main focus of the church. Yes, we may be stewards of the earth, but we are to save people first, not the planet!
