Politicizing Human Tragedy

Our political and ideological differences are making us a callous and uncompassionate people.

August 26, 2019

If you believe for a moment Democrats are above even this, and that they wouldn’t do anything, say anything, or stoop to the most egregious and contemptible behavior, then you must be a Democrat, because they have proved they will, even when it involves the slaughter of innocent people. No, this is not about abortion or infanticide, issues I have often written on, but it is still an unspeakable tragedy.

On August 3 (2019) in El Paso, Texas, at a Walmart, 21-year-old Patrick Crusius, armed with an "assault" weapon and wearing safety glasses and ear protectors, slaughtered 22 and injured, some seriously, 26 innocent shoppers. According to reports, there were bodies strewn in the parking lot and the store. When confronted by law enforcement, Crusius threw his hands up and surrendered without further incident.

Crusius lives over 600 miles away in Allen, Texas, a suburb of Dallas. Why travel all that distance? It appears the main reason is that El Paso has a majority Mexican/America population. This theory can be substantiated by an online, 4-page document, which was termed a “white supremacist manifesto” authorities believe was posted by the killer. In it, Crusius expresses rage against immigrants. His reason for the slayings was to quell the Hispanic invasion of Texas. He writes “I am simply defending my country from cultural and ethnic replacement brought on by an invasion.”

Approximately 13 hours after the El Paso shooting, on August 4 in Dayton, Ohio, 24-year-old Connor Betts, clad in body armor and ear protectors, and armed with an AR-15 rifle, killed 9 innocent people on a popular street lined with pubs and restaurants. One of his victims was his own sister. Within seconds of the slaughter, the Dayton police shot and killed Betts before he could enter one of the local watering holes where it is believed the death count could have been much greater.

Both of these mass shootings accounted for 84 innocent people being killed or injured. The youngest victim was 4 months old and thankfully survived; both parents, however, were killed shielding their child from the killer’s rampage. The oldest victim among the injured was 82. The FBI has opened domestic terrorist investigations on both shootings.

President Trump for most of his time in office has been labeled a 'racist,' 'white nationalist,' and 'white supremacist' by his detractors, and was now accused of being a direct cause of the El Paso shooting, based on the killer’s manifesto that had elements in it that professed what could be considered the thoughts of a white supremacist. However, Patrick Crusius also stated that his actions had nothing to do with the president and that he thought this way for some time.

Very little was mentioned or discussed, however, regarding the political and social affinities of the Dayton, Ohio killer, Connor Betts. The reason I believe was intentional and proved the utter hypocrisy of Democrats and the media. It appears that Betts was a supporter of Senators Sanders and Warren, and had no affection for the president.

The media, especially CNN and MSNBC, went out of their way to instigate and incite their Democrat guests to accuse the president and conservatives of racism and white supremacy. Robert Francis “Beto” O’Rourke, a resident of El Paso, was the most vociferous and vocal. Not only did he accuse the president of every conceivable deficiency, but so extreme was his rhetoric that he placed the weapon in Mr. Trump’s hand, that fired the bullets that slaughtered over thirty innocent people.

Two mass shootings within twenty four hours of each other, and you would hope the sentiments expressed would be those of sympathy and sorrow for the victims and their families, but not today, not anymore, and not in a polarized socially and politically divided America. Within only hours of the shootings, the heartlessness and callous disregard displayed by Democrats, specifically the 2020 presidential candidates and their media enablers, was beneath contempt.
