Some Hot Topics For 2002
(Newsletter #259 - A Weekly View from the Foothills of Appalachia)

We’re starting to worry about this Justice Department. It’s almost like they are using the Reno operation manual of selective prosecution. For instance, there are volumes of evidence supporting wide spread voter fraud by Democrats in the last election but no indication anything is being done about it. All those federal prosecutors and no action? What’s the problem here, negligence maybe?

There’s a new election coming up. Yet, we see the same old campaign contribution fraud schemes starting up by the Democrats. And, heck, there is absolutely no reason for the socialist Democrats to disregard their tried and proven voter fraud techniques. Quite obviously, no one cares -- else, there would be some outrage evident throughout the country. None being heard, we will not be surprised when the socialist Democrats ramp up their voter fraud program next November.

It’s not often that union workers get to design and control the quality of a product, but they do when they are government workers. The teachers’ union is a case in point. Reading, writing and arithmetic skills are at an all time low throughout the country. But, the children know all about political correct socialism, homosexuality, and condom use.

Professor Thomas Sowell calls our public education system the "most expensive incompetence in the world" and we agree. For instance, the Massachusetts Education Board discussed a scheme that will allow students who flunk their "mandatory" graduation exam a way to get their high school diplomas anyway. And school officials in Ithaca, N.Y. are requiring that first and second grade kids be graded on their tolerance, reports the Cornell Review. The kids will get grades based on how well they "respect others of varying cultures, genders, experiences, and abilities." The grade will appear on report cards under the heading "Lifelong Learning Skills." Proper indoctrination is more important that reading there.

According to a recent nationwide study by the University of California at Los Angeles, more college freshmen today describe themselves as politically liberal than at any time since the Vietnam War. That’s because they also know less about our Constitution, the original intent of the Founding Fathers and basic economics than any other high school graduates in the history of the United States. And that, folks, seems to be by the intentional design of the socialists running the education establishment.

Even religion is feeling the influence of feel good socialism. The International Bible Society recently announced that America’s best-selling modern Bible is about to get an update using gender-neutral wording, despite criticism of that idea from many sectors. Apparently political correctness even supersedes Divine Inspiration nowadays.

On January 23, The Washington Times reported that an analysis of census figures shows the Census Bureau reports that there were at least 8,705,421 illegal aliens residing here in 2000. These 8.7-million illegals have overcrowded many of our education systems, hospitals, welfare rolls and prisons. Yet, nothing is being done. Worse, at least 58,000 Middle Eastern men from unfriendly countries are here illegally. Terrorist infiltrators, anyone? Maybe. Anyone care?

Yet, we passively sit by while the federal government passes law after law adversely impacting on our inalienable rights as American citizens. Never mind that the problem is not with the American citizens. The negligence was with federal and state officials who are supposed to be enforcing immigration law. Yet, these officials get a free pass on negligence while the American people are required to give up liberty in hopes of maintaining a little "homeland" security. We all know the new laws won’t work; but never mind.

Last December, the Department of Transportation announced that 69 workers -- many of whom are not U.S. citizens -- at Salt Lake City International Airport were indicted on charges of falsifying their applications for airport security badges so as to be able to enter "secure" areas.

"An investigation by a joint federal and state task force found that employees at the airport, including security checkpoint screeners, used false Social Security numbers on their applications for the badges, which allow access to secure areas of the airport. DOT OIG (Office of Inspector General) was involved because of its experience in investigating violations of federal regulations governing airport security."(1)

That’s just one airport. This is not an uncommon problem. Those new "federal screeners" checking passengers at airports do not even need to be American citizens or have a high school education.

So much for "security" when officials refuse to look at the real cause of the problem: themselves.
