Abortion, One Year Later

Saturday, June 24 (2023), marked the one-year anniversary of the landmark Dobbs vs. Jackson decision that overturned Roe vs. Wade, sending the question of the right to abortion back to the states. Most of us believed that the ruling would cause some dissension and anger among abortion supporters. Little did we realize the extent of the anger and frustration, and moreover the cataclysmic effect it would have on an already divided nation. 

Over the past year, the divide between the supporters of abortion and the pro-life movement has greatly widened, and the repercussions have been catastrophic. Attacks on churches and pro-life pregnancy centers have reached epidemic proportions - at last count they numbered over 300. And to add to all the mayhem faced by pro-life entities, the Department of Justice has dragged its feet in investigating these violent and destructive acts.

The good news is that according to recent polling by Five Thirty-Eight, which is a Disney-owned website, there have been over 24,000 fewer abortions. It also revealed that in Democratic-governed states that passed legislation upholding abortion rights - Colorado, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada and Oregon - the incidents of abortion increased. However, these increases were offset by decreases in Republican-run states, which include Alabama, Arkansas, Idaho, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

Abortion, for most women, is an extremely personal, sensitive, and devastating decision to have to make; we should all realize this, even pro-life advocates. In the states that have banned or restricted abortion rights, the woman has to either travel to a state that protects those rights, or see her pregnancy through and give birth to the child. This has added to the burden the expectant mother has had to deal with, and again is another reason for the decrease in abortions.

What is most disturbing, however, is the anger, recklessness, and violence, usually from abortion supporters, and their cynical and ruthless behavior. From the Democrats, mainstream media, big business, radical activists like Antifa, the Left, and the Entertainment industry, they have all boarded the abortion train, and have banded together to ride this issue to power. Abortion activists claimed that overturning Roe vs. Wade would result in the deaths of women. It has been proven, there has not been one single death since the ruling; this was just another attempt to create further hostilities. 

The apparent leader of this movement is President Biden, a so-called devout Catholic, who since assuming office has voiced his ardent uncompromising support for abortion. According to the White House and administration officials, Mr. Biden is planning to bring the abortion issue “front and center” in his reelection campaign. His campaign manager, Julie Rodriquez, has said “I think it will continue to be a galvanizing issue, and we’ll continue to find ways to make it front and center.” 

The plan for making abortion a major theme in the 2024 election was also voiced by Former White House Chief of Staff, Ron Klain, “You’re going to have a Democrat, Joe Biden, who has stood up for a woman’s right to choose, and is pushing for legislation to restore Roe vs. Wade as the law of the land.” Republicans must be vigilant, and when discussing the issue use sensitivity and common sense, and not alienate the female population.

The president of Live Action, a pro-life advocacy group, Lila Rose expressed the sentiments of most anti-abortion activists, “We had been preparing for that ruling - Dobbs - in many ways for years, because we understand that this battle plays out in state legislatures and federally. But it also plays out in the court of public opinion and hearts and minds. We have our work cut out for us; it’s time to not just rest on our laurels.” 

Whether you accept it or not, abortion destroys innocent life. In the few instances where it becomes necessary for the life of the mother, it is still no noble cause, and nothing to applaud as some of its supporters are wont to do. This is a manifestation of coldhearted people who have lost the capacity to feel and have become devoid of respect for the dignity and sanctity of life. They have lost their faith and the sight of God. And what could be the repercussions when you lose sight of God in this life; He could lose sight of you in the next.
