Science Headlines Can Be So Dumb Sometimes

Is This Serious?

May 19, 2025

Headline: “Scientists in a race to discover why our Universe exists.”

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cjwvgevjjl6o

In the article above, it says a team of some 1,400 scientists "are in a race for the answer with a separate team of Japanese scientists – who are several years ahead.” It goes on. “The current theory of how the Universe came into being can't explain the existence of the planets, stars and galaxies we see around us. Both teams are building detectors that study a sub-atomic particle called a neutrino in the hope of finding answers.”

Evidently (to these scientists), there are two types of particles from the “creation” of the universe. I am not sure if this “scientist” really meant to use the word “creation,” which would imply that there was a “creator.” The double-talk that continues then “explains” that there is matter along with anti-matter, which should have canceled each other out. But matter somehow won, or prevailed. And so, the existence of a sub-atomic particle - the neutrino - and its opposite, the anti-neutrino, is key to possibly understanding why the universe is the way it is, and why.

Some might ask, “What are these guys smoking, or taking? I want some.”

It surely does sound like a deep drinking (or smoking something) discussion about the looser ends of reality. But to be sure, these 1,400 scientists from 30 different countries are involved in this study. They will “fire” particles from deep underground near Chicago, some 800 miles to a research facility nearly a mile underground in western South Dakota, to observe how these particles change in their travels.

"Among them is Dr. Kate Shaw from Sussex University, who told me [the author of the article] that the discoveries in store will be ‘transformative’ to our understanding of the Universe and humanity's view of itself. ‘It is really exciting that we are here now with the technology, with the engineering, with the computer software skills to really be able to attack these big questions,’ she said."

A key line in the above article reads, “The current theory of how the Universe came into being can't explain the existence of the planets, stars and galaxies we see around us.”

The very last lines of the article provides the answer - “The race may be on, but the first results are only expected in a few years' time. The question of just what happened at the beginning of time to bring us into existence remains a mystery – for now.

“Good grief, Charlie Brown,” as Lucy would say! They just leave you hanging!

I, for one, sometimes wonder why there are departments of universities in existence for the study of things that are immeasurable and unknowable. Yes, all that they discover with the finest telescopes and most profound instruments is truly fascinating as well as perplexing. But what is really the purpose of it? Does it help anything, in any way, except to just be passed along to others, who in turn are fascinated and perplexed, and then pass it on to others?

To be sure, there are monies spent on this “research,” to the tune of countless millions of dollars. For what? So it can be passed further down? Taught and tested on, and then taught some more? Where do they get the money, the funding, and why? Sure, this is all fascinating, but really… Perhaps some of this money could go toward the housing and care of the growing numbers of elderly in our world…just sayin'.

And I wonder if all the scientists really could discover why, and how, the universe and all of reality came into existence, if they would believe it.

What I believe, I could tell them, that God made it all for us, and for Himself. It's a big, beautiful mystery, this life and all we see around us. But it is God who made us, we didn't make God. And we would do well to receive and understand and appreciate this life that God has given to us. Just as the scientists search and await the answer as to how the universe and everything in it came into existence, there is a craving in each of us to know why we are alive. What is the purpose of this life?

Simply put, we are here to “love one another," just as Jesus and God love us. If you, or any of the scientists, come up with anything better than this, let me know!

Another article headline read, "The furthest galaxies are now out of our reach." Oh, really??? Why? Well, I saw that (somehow) researchers have “discovered” that the farthest reaches of the known universe are now (in their figuring) understood to be around (give or take…) 12 to 15 billion light years away. I wonder how they might “know” this. That means the light getting to us here now, started out, well, roughly 12-15 billion years ago! Well, you know, give or take some for error.
