Can There Even Be A "Christian Country"?By Paul Hayden March 23, 2026Pardon me, but I am all over the place in this particular “article.” It could almost be called “random thoughts from an aging man who thinks a lot.” It's how my brain works, somehow, with all these thoughts going on. I recently attended another funeral for the wife of a friend. It happens, and it's sad. But it sure gets me thinking. The whole idea of life, and what we are doing here, and why things are the way they are. People discuss and argue whether the United States is a “Christian” country. What would that even look like? To be sure, the wisdom and teachings of Christianity have certainly helped form the foundation and structures of our country. There are those who argue it is in no way a Christian country, and others argue the opposite. Sometimes, I think people just enjoy arguing for the sake of arguing and fussing! Some say the U.S. has gone too far in trying to force Christian thinking onto the population, and then there are those who argue that the laws should be even more strict against allowing certain “religions” to practice within the country, in that they proclaim violence and antagonism against certain other religions. I have studied this, though not exhaustively, all my life. And though we would like to think so, all “religions” DO NOT LEAD TO THE SAME GOAL. It's nice thinking, but it is not true. There are indeed similarities, but there are HUGE differences as well, that should not be ignored. In a strictly Christian country, one in which all the laws are based on the faith and contents of the Bible, I am not sure how it could be set up. First of all, for law and order as well as national defense, there would need to be a Christian military and police force. And the legal system, to keep things in order, would also need to be thoroughly Bible-based. Jesus called individuals to follow Him and keep His commandments - not countries. He Himself was a Jew, an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, through Judah. Yet Jesus was truly the Son of God, as somehow He became a man to complete the connection between God Himself and mankind, to save mankind and complete the creation process that makes more sense than any other “theory” that someone could come up with. We are strangers and aliens here on this earth. We are to live in countries, and when we can, we are to live according to the laws of that country, or suffer the consequences. The early apostles truly found out what that meant, as they proclaimed the life and death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus. They told the authorities that in a choice between obeying and serving God or man, they would choose to serve and obey their Master and God. Are we each one a body that has a soul, or are we a soul that lives in a body for a while? Though this is a seriously metaphysical question, we each are confronted with it in our lives. What (or, Who) gives us consciousness? What is life? What is the purpose of life? Scientists see images in their newer and more powerful telescopes, using scientific equipment that measures light in these images, and determine in their humble estimation, that this star was formed early in the history of the universe, some 16 BILLION YEARS ago, and that it has more carbon and less iron than Earth's sun, and yada yada, blah blah… With all that “they” think “they” know, all the scientists who have ever lived have NEVER come up with the exact knowledge of how life comes about, or when life started. “They” think they are so smart, but they have no answers for the true purpose of life…UNLESS they join their thinking with the wisdom and knowledge that is found in the Bible. We are each here for such a relatively short time, but for each of us it is an important time - it's all we have. Enjoy each breath, and give thanks to God for life - it is God who made us, whether you believe it or not. He made us for a purpose, so find yours out, and do it well. You are on borrowed time, as “they” say… God bless us all!

Paul Hayden is a Christian believer, and an American patriot, necessarily in that order. He is a student of the Bible, and is avidly interested in our role in the context of history, as understood through the heart and eyes of faith. Paul has lived and traveled somewhat widely, and now lives in the heartland of the U.S. (central Illinois), with his wife Donna - they have five grown children. Since December of 2016, he serves as the Editor-in-Chief of www.ConservativeTruth.org."I was raised by a Christian minister, Kenneth Hayden, until his death when I was 10. Then my mom Bonnalee Hunt Hayden married a farmer. So I was raised in a very down-to-earth home. My faith has grown through the years, but both in conjunction with the institutional church and through small groups and individuals, including books as well as group settings, where deep, sincere faith is shared that aligns with Biblical truth."
