Is the GOP Becoming the Gay Old Party?

Senate Republicans failed to expel “conservative” Senator Larry Craig when he was caught propositioning an undercover policeman in an airport men’s room by tapping on his foot in an adjacent stall. Now, top members of the Grand Old Party (GOP) in the Senate and House are playing footsy with a group of so-called homosexual Republicans who favor homosexual marriage and gays in the military.

Senator John Cornyn, chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, and Representative Pete Sessions, chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, have confirmed to AIM that they will be participating in a September 22 national dinner/fundraiser in Washington, D.C. sponsored by the Log Cabin Republicans, an openly homosexual group.  

These two Republicans are in charge of electing Republican Senators and House members.

A Log Cabin spin-off known as GOProud is featuring conservative commentator Ann Coulter at its “Homocon” event a few days later in New York City. The unmarried Coulter, 49, made headlines a few years ago by labeling Democrat John Edwards, later caught in an extramarital affair, a “faggot.”

Meanwhile,  with the votes of Republican Senators Susan Collins, Judd Gregg, Richard Lugar, Lindsey Graham, and Olympia Snowe, Elena Kagan was confirmed 63-37 on August 5, 2010 as President Obama’s second nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court. 

“Kagan will be Supreme Court’s first lesbian” was the provocative headline in the Howard Phillips Issues and Strategy Bulletin before the hearings even took place. The headline was based on an article that appeared briefly on the CBS website that cited Kagan’s open homosexuality and “well known” female partner. White House pressure forced CBS to take the item down.

Senate Republicans were afraid to raise the issue during her confirmation hearings, despite the obvious conflict of interest posed by her reported “sexual preference” in deciding future court cases, such as whether the American people have the right to safeguard in law marriage between a man and a woman. 

There is some speculation that Senate Republicans were reluctant to raise the issue because the Republican Senate candidate in Illinois, Mark Kirk, has been reported by a gay activist who specializes in “outing” politicians to be a secret homosexual. Kirk denies the allegation. His ex-wife, however, has offered this unusual denial: “It’s not an accurate explanation that Mark is gay, but nevertheless, that’s how some people choose to reconcile it.”

The Kagan hearing did, however, demonstrate that the now-confirmed Justice has a militant pro-homosexual orientation in such matters as opposition to military recruiters on campus because of the Pentagon’s homosexual exclusion policy.  Other evidence demonstrated that Kagan is so extreme that she is committed to acceptance of the so-called transgender legal agenda.

The Republican failure to stop Kagan has come back to haunt the nation in the tyrannical ruling by federal Judge Vaughn Walker that overturned a vote by the people of California which affirmed traditional marriage by passing Proposition 8. If his decision is appealed and upheld, it could eventually go to the Supreme Court where Kagan would be an obvious vote for overturning marriage between one man and one woman.

Voters in 30 states have decided that marriage between a man and woman, based on the Judeo-Christian foundations of this nation, is worth preserving. All of those measures are now in jeopardy because of the actions of a federal judge with a huge conflict of interest.

The “Republican” governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, a long-time backer of the Log Cabin Republicans, refused to defend the law in court. The legal battle to save traditional marriage has been carried out by the Alliance Defense Fund.

Walker’s ruling has even alarmed America ’s Catholic Bishops, who have spent much of their time since Obama was elected lobbying for his national health care legislation and amnesty for illegal aliens. Cardinal Francis George, President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, declared that “It is tragic that a federal judge would overturn the clear and expressed will of the people in their support for the institution of marriage. No court of civil law has the authority to reach into areas of human experience that nature itself has defined.”

The latest polls still show a majority of Americans against gay marriage. The Gallup poll found Americans against it by 56-40 percent. The latest Fox News poll (PDF) found only 37 percent in favor of homosexual marriage.

Matt Barber, an attorney with the Liberty Counsel, which has been critical of the ADF’s handling of the case, wrote last February that the alleged conflict of interest helped explain Walker’s one-sided handling of the case and virtually guaranteed that he would come down on the side of the homosexual activists.

Citing federal law that “a judge shall disqualify himself when he knows that he has a financial or any other interest that could be substantially affected by the outcome of the proceeding,” Barber argued that Walker could personally benefit from the overturning of Proposition 8 because it would give him the “right” to marry a man and should, therefore, have stepped down from the case.

Walker was confirmed under President George H. W. Bush. His son, the second President Bush, won re-election in 2004 on a platform that included protecting traditional marriage. But his wife, Laura, made headlines earlier this year by endorsing homosexual marriage. His vice president, Dick Cheney, was caught in an embarrassing family situation when his daughter Mary came out as a lesbian and had a baby through artificial insemination. The former vice president supports homosexual marriage.

Senator John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign manager, Steve Schmidt, endorsed homosexual marriage in a speech (PDF) before the Log Cabin Republicans.

All of this serves to validate the thesis of the controversial 2007 book, Not Holier Than Thou, written by the late Alan Stang, making the case that homosexuals and their sympathizers occupy important positions of power in the Republican Party. The book includes a letter from former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, now a possible 2012 GOP presidential candidate, promising a Log Cabin affiliate in the Bay State that he would embrace the gay rights agenda, including gays in the military.

What many Republicans have decided to ignore is that America ’s founders regarded homosexuality as a crime against nature and it was prohibited in the states and the military. This view was grounded in America ’s Judeo-Christian legal traditions.

However, rather than express concern about what is happening to American values that have been on the books since our founding as a nation, Sen. Cornyn and Rep. Sessions are leading the GOP effort to appeal for the votes of so-called “Republican homosexuals” and “gay conservatives.” Since these individuals are, at best, only three percent of the total population, the reason for the appearances has to be the financial resources that the gay rights lobby can bring to bear on behalf of certain Republican candidates. The result, however, will most certainly be the devaluation of the importance of the conservative Christians and pro-family activists who traditionally are attracted to the GOP.

Cornyn’s office defends his participation in the Log Cabin Republican dinner in September. “They invited him and Sen. Cornyn accepted,” stated Cornyn spokesman Charles Chamberlayne. “He will focus on issues they agree on, such as lower taxes, smaller government, reining in out of control government spending, to name a few.”

While the national Log Cabin Republicans have issued a statement hailing Walker’s overturning of Proposition 8, the group’s inclusion of Nick Herbert, a top member of the British Conservative Party, is an ominous indication of where else the GOP may be heading under the influence of the self-proclaimed “gay conservatives.”

Nick Herbert said in a speech at the libertarian Cato Institute earlier this year that “I’m especially honored to be sharing a platform with one of Britain ’s most valuable exports, Andrew Sullivan.” The HIV-positive Sullivan, a speaker at the same event, calls himself a “gay conservative” but has married another man and was caught soliciting “bare-back” or dangerous, unprotected anal sex on the Internet.

Herbert said he looked forward to the day when “the Prime Minister of the UK or the President of the United States could just as easily be gay as black.”

David Cameron, Conservative Party leader and British Prime Minister, supported reducing the age of consent for sexual relations from 21 to 18 in 1994 and to 16 in 2000 and has followed through as Prime Minister with a measure to erase criminal convictions related to past homosexual activity from the criminal records data base. The Cameron government has also promised a “government action plan” on “transgender equality” next year.

The British group, Christian Concern for Our Nation, says that the government “has endorsed the aggressive agenda, set by the previous [Tony Blair] Government, to promote a radically pro-homosexual ideology across British society and overseas.” Blair converted to Catholicism in 2007.

Pastor Dale McAlpine was hauled before the British courts after a homosexual police officer arrested him on April 20, 2010, for saying that homosexuality is going against the word of God. He was held in a cell for several hours. Charges were eventually dropped.

Can the U.S. be far behind with “conservative” Republicans following President Obama’s lead and pandering to the militant gay rights lobby?
