Atheism: Poor Odds, Bad Science and the ‘Law of Non Contradictions’

November 18, 2013

“Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him.” (Proverbs 26: 4)

An atheist, a prophet and a liberal walk into an interview...
On Wednesday November 13, 2013 I was scheduled for an interview with Fox News Radio’s Alan Colmes. There was supposed to be an American Atheist, director of media relations Dave Muscato and a Rabbi in the three way discussion. The Rabbi was unable to take part, so it came down to Muscato, and I and Alan Colmes as the moderator.

Colmes, the quintessential controversy monger, was cordial, friendly and although he directed most of the questions to Muscato, was reasonably fair - for a flaming liberal.

Muscato seemed to take pride in the fact that he is a former Bible believing Christian who had since moved up the ladder of reason and intellectualism to the high place where all atheists come to roost, the land of giving God his walking papers.

While not the slightest bit scientific or biblical, my thoughts kept wandering back to a line from a beloved hymn written by Daniel De Marbelle, ‘When They Ring the Golden Bells,’ a song even Muscato may have known because he was formerly a Christian musician.

The lines from the song that kept reverberating in my mind were, “When our days shall know their number, and in death we sweetly slumber, when the King commands the spirit to be free.”

God is in no danger from atheist’s, but what if the matter was reversed? What if atheism were reversed, what if God ceased to believe that men or an individual was real, what if he decided you didn’t exist? In a word - it would be curtains. It would be the instant shriveling of the fig tree for someone.

“Now in the morning as he returned into the city, he hungered. And when he saw a fig tree in the way, he came to it, and found nothing thereon, but leaves only, and said unto it, Let no fruit grow on thee henceforward for ever. And presently the fig tree withered away. And when the disciples saw it, they marvelled, saying, how soon is the fig tree withered away!” (Mt 21: 18 - 20)

Why does God tolerate our nonsense?

Atheism’s, poor odds, bad science and bum logic
Atheists may be the only people in the world that form organizations, write treatises and argue in endless debates about something they claim does not exist. We have all heard the expression ‘what if they had a war and nobody came to fight,’ but with atheists, the expression would be modified to, “what if they had no enemy to fight and the atheists still showed up to do battle.” Please, if God does not exist, pull up the tents and go home.

If the Christians should be wrong they have lost nothing, no heaven, but no hell either – this is known as a win-win in any language. If the atheists are wrong they risk eternal separation from God. They are in the 50 percent bracket – those odd are stifling. They are willing to gamble their entire future (eternal) on a whim whose odds are riskier than a bad gambler would take even if the stakes were only a nickel. Perhaps it was an atheist that coined the phrase – ‘his life wasn’t worth a nickel?’

Then along comes the evolutionist with the belief that man came from nothing moved up through the inter species ranks of creepy crawling things until at last now we stand upright and use our three pound brain to solve every problem, but one – finding the missing links that should prove our past. There are tens of thousands of scientists, academics and eager modern followers still waiting for the proof.

In an attempt to make light of the faith, Dave Muscato asked me for the benefit of the thousands who were listening to Colmes’ syndicated show if I actually believed the bible record of creation and other events. Before I could answer he wheeled through the various dispensations of the bible on his own, starting with Adam and Eve in the garden. He whisked through the Old Testament and then got down to the virgin birth, the life of Christ and his death for the sins of the world and the resurrection.

I had to hold back the laughter, but I finally gave a simple yes, to his question and then I thanked him for doing something I thought I could never do on the Colmes show – go through the entire bible, up to and including, the gospel message.

Muscato offered nothing new in the way of a fresh argument, but only confirmed what writers Norman Geisler and Ron Brooks stated years ago in their classic, ‘When Skeptics Ask’ published in nine editions.

Using the statement “Logic is not valid. It can’t tell us anything about God” Geisler and Brooks go on to say, “Look at this carefully. It says that logic doesn’t apply to these issues. But the statement is logical about these issues. It is logical, because claims to be true, while its opposite is false. That claim, called the law of non-contradiction, is the basis of all logic.”

Let’s put this out in the simplest possible terms. To say there is no evidence or not enough evidence to prove God exists is the very same reason to say that the lack of evidence also proves that he does exist. Perhaps it could be seen as the law of mutual contradictions, but in any case the atheist argument holds no more water that the stated faith of the humblest believer.

Atheism does not account for the bible’s three P’s. Almost all biblical premises are followed by prophetic promise. The premise of the gospel, that God was in Christ reconciling fallen man to himself is followed by the prophetic promise that he will one day return to judge the quick and the dead.

The apostle Paul said he strove for the mastery of his life and knew he would win a crown at the end of his life. He said, “I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air.” (1 Co 9: 26)

Using poor odds, bad science and bum logic, the atheists of this world will find that when the prophetic promise of Christ’s return is fulfilled they will then certainly know they have spent their entire lives ‘beating the air.’

The ‘Big Bang’ or the ‘Loud Voice’ – The Choice is Yours to Make
Atheism relies heavily on the unwitnessed, unheard big bang that allegedly took place billions of years ago. Our faith is based on a historic fact, the life, words and deeds of a man who was seen and heard by an entire nation, followed by a dozen faithful witnesses who recorded all he did. He said many things and with full authority said he would require those words of every creature that hears them.

Some of the last words Jesus ever spoke as he died on the cross were spoken in a “loud voice.” They were the words of his deepest pain and agony as he hung on the cross only minutes before his death.

“And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” (Mr 15: 34)

Unlike the un-heard crash of the ‘big bang,’ these words and the question they pose have a very clear answer.

God had momentarily forsaken his son in his time of extreme agony for only one reason – that reason is - you.

It was the price of your redemption and the key to unlocking our slavery to sin. It was heard then and is still heard by millions around the globe through the witness of others.

What do you hear?

Not one person has ever heard the big bang, but every person on the globe will certainly hear the voice of the Son of God. That day is near.

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.” (John 5: 25)
