Jurisdictional Jousting

Many people respond to authority like this: when you come to a presentation of authority, submit to it! It’s like the famous Yogi Berra witticism, “When you come to a fork in the road, take it!” Which is NOT, by the way, what the Bible teaches! It is a question of jurisdiction. Does the authority figure have jurisdiction, and if so, is it absolute…or did you choose it? Didn’t know you have a choice of jurisdiction? Well, hang on…because you’re about to learn that you absolutely DO!

There are, in fact, four distinct levels of law. The top one is fully authoritative all of the time; the one on the bottom is authoritative only if we agree to it! (And, shockingly, that is what most presume is the law, because it has been drilled into us in school, in the media, in the movies, and – yes – even in church.)

What is jurisdiction, and why does jurisdiction matter? Where does it come from? What happens when jurisdictions conflict, and how does one choose which one to go with when jurisdictional conflict happens? What is the process of changing jurisdictions, and why and in what circumstances should we consider doing so?

That is the way of the powerful man.
