We Hate HurricanesSurfs Up!By Bob McCray October 3, 2022![]()
Here we go again, it’s another trip through the wash cycle. It’s hurricane season and Mother Nature is offering up a new storm from the Caribbean. A hurricane named Ian is spinning up the west coast of Florida, a category 4 with its first scheduled stop in Fort Myers. For old Florida Crackers like myself, whose family has been in Florida for almost 200 years, it’s time to pick up and board up. Back in high school, it was surf's up, time for half of the school to skip out and head for the beach. Then go home, pull out your generator, and put plywood over your windows. All kidding aside, the people who always are hurt the most are the newcomers. They have bought homes in low-lying areas and have no understanding of the power of a hurricane. The three biggest dangers in a hurricane are wind-driven debris, tornados, and the wall of water that comes in the storm surge. A 2x4 board will pierce a tree, the tornados will blow a building apart, and a hurricane’s winds will push ashore a 20-foot wall of water. In short, a hurricane is a dangerous beast, and if you’re in an affected area you will lose power and mobility because of debris piles. Every time a hurricane hits Florida, the nut jobs on the lunatic left start gloating and blaming the Republican Governor for incurring the wrath of God for their policies. It offers an opportunity for the intellect of left-wing politicians and the genius of Hollywood to be put on display. A few years ago, it was actress Jennifer Lawrence who said hurricanes Harvey and Irma were Mother Nature’s wrath for electing President Donald Trump. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) implied on MSNBC’s, 27 Sept 2022, ‘Morning Joe’ show, people needed to vote Democrat to solve Climate Change and end hurricanes. Are these people complete idiots or are they reflecting the need to teach earth sciences in our educational institutions? Man does not control our weather on this dynamic planet. A category 4 hurricane with 155 mph winds in the eye wall is nothing more than a giant tornado, spitting out smaller tornados, it’s a lawn mower. Those crazy enough to have a hurricane party during a powerful hurricane will be counted among the dead and missing. There is nothing you own that is so important that you need to stay and ride one of these storms out. It's time to head to higher ground and get away from the storm.
