A Weekend of Christmas MusicDecember 24, 2018Last weekend I was truly blessed by being able to participate three times in singing music that glorified the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. On Friday evening and again on Sunday evening I was part of an 80-voice auditioned choir accompanied by a 20-piece professional orchestra. We sang Handel's Messiah, one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written. What is remarkable about this one and a half hour oratorio is that Handel didn't write a single word of the many lyrics. They are all musical renditions of the Word of God. The Lord allowed Handel to write the powerful music, but He gave Handel the words. I believe that's what makes the Messiah so powerful - and spiritually moving. Two of the best-known parts of the Messiah are The Hallelujah Chorus and For Unto Us a Child is Born. Here are links to the audio recordings we made on Friday so you can hear those two: The Hallelujah Chorus For Unto Us a Child is Born On Saturday I was asked to join a "Flash Mob" to sing Christmas carols at our largest local mall. That morning the organizer asked if I could bring my guitar since she had sprained her wrist, so I ended up helping lead the singers from six local churches as well as members of the Masterworks Chorus. They were spread out among the people on the first floor, as well as singing from the balconies on the second floor - the ultimate in surround sound. The singers were great, the acoustics were wonderful, and everyone - singers and shoppers alike - was blessed. Here's a link to the video: Christmas Carol Flash Mob There are many reasons why I look forward to "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year." But Christmas music is the main reason I love December.
