I am honored to be the Chairman of the Board of Restoration Destination, Inc.  – a ministry that serves ex-offenders. I will tell you a bit more about the ministry in a minute. The Annual Great Give is a 24-hour online fundraising event that has a goal of raising as much money for non-profits as possible in one day. Your giving will be matched by generous donors. It’s the best deal in town!

The inmate recidivism rate in Florida is over 50%. This is the rate at which men and women who have served their time and been released, end up back in the “system” in one way or another – typically by serving time again in either jail or prison. The rate for people who spend at least a year with our ministry is less than 1%.

That’s an amazing saving in human capital – lives that are useful and productive as opposed to hopelessly sitting in a tiny cell. It also saves society millions of dollars. That includes the cost of housing, feeding and guarding prisoners is about $30,000 per year in Florida, where we are located. For elderly prisoners that cost can be a high as $70,000, due to health issues. Add to this the cost of investigating the crimes, arresting the offender and court costs, and the cost is staggering.

We take in people who were literally living under bridges. We provide safe housing and a wonderful on-campus church where they learn about the love of God. We help them get jobs and even provide transportation until they can get their own. The bottom line: We are a Destination where lives are Restored. We don’t try to change behavior, which is the way the prison system tries to deal with the problem of the prison revolving door. Our goal is to change hearts.
