Tommy’s at it Again

Senator Tom Daschle (D) of South Dakota is at it again. He just can’t seem to keep his mouth shut, and when ever he opens it, he shoots himself in the foot which is jammed into his open mouth. I’m beginning to think the D after his name stands for "Dumb" instead of "Democrat," but I suppose it could mean both.

Remember when he said that the tax cuts caused the recession, and hinted strongly that we ought to raise taxes? That was a pretty stupid thing to say to voters who are tired of seeing half their money disappear into the maw of government before they even get it in their hands, and the statement had other Democrats running away from Tommy like ticks off a dead coon dog. I’m sure that somebody in the party eventually took him aside and told him to shut up, but Tommy just can’t do that.

His latest move to try and garner some political points was to complain about the shadow government. Tommy said he thought it was a good idea, but he thought Congress should have been briefed about it, and that he didn’t appreciate having to learn about it in the Washington Post. That sounds pretty bad for President Bush, but there’s a problem that cropped up and bit old Tommy right in the butt: it’s a lie.

Tommy has known about the shadow government since at least 9/11 of last year, because he was one of the government leaders whisked away to the secret location from which the shadow government operates. Even worse, Tommy voted to appropriate money for the shadow government, and the White House briefed congressional leaders about the whole thing. Oopsy!

Confronted with the evidence of his lie, Tommy tried to pull a Clinton and said that he didn’t know he was voting to appropriate money for the shadow government. So, Tommy, you’re telling us you’re not a liar, just stupid? That’s better, and ranks right up there with the "I was taking a wee" defense of Al Gore when it was pointed out he attended a meeting where the Buddhist Temple fundraiser was discussed. It really makes me wonder what drugs the people of South Dakota are taking when they vote for this buffoon.

Personally, I hope Tommy keeps right on sticking his foot in his mouth and getting caught in lies. That should help the Democrats lose seats in the coming elections, and that sounds like a good idea to me. But I’m pretty sure there are people in the DNC who cringe when they hear, "Tommy’s at it again," and they might be able to get him to shut up.

Now wouldn’t that be terrible?
