Impeach Torricelli Now!

August 11, 2002

by Charles E. Perry

A man is sitting in jail right now for bribing Senator Robert Torricelli (D-NJ). Oddly enough, and thanks to a Bill Clinton appointee, Torricelli was never brought to trial for taking the bribes a court of law proved he received. That should be enough to outrage us all right there, but it gets worse. The Senate Ethics Committee decided, against all logic, not to bring the question of expelling Torricelli to the Senate for a vote. Instead, they gave him the equivalent of a slap on the wrist with a wet noodle.

Why they did that is so blatantly obvious that even diehard liberals have to see it: if Torricelli were expelled from the Senate, as he justly should have been, the Democrats would lose their majority and the balance of power would shift to the GOP. Tell me, does that make you as pig biting mad as it does me? These men, sworn to uphold the Constitution and the rule of law, sworn to serve the people, put partisan party politics ahead of justice. Impeach Torricelli? Hey, we should impeach the entire ethics committee.

But yeah, we should begin a campaign to Impeach Torricelli if he isn’t cast out by the voters of his state in the fall. Congressman James Traficant was expelled from the House and is going to serve eight years in prison for crimes substantially less serious than those Torricelli committed. That he continues to serve as a United States Senator is a slap in the face to every citizen of these United States, and sends the message that those in power, who toe the party line, can violate the law with impunity. This is not a message we want to send in an allegedly free republic.

So write your Senators, both of them. Express outrage that the Senate has allowed a criminal to stay in its hallowed halls so that Democrats can chair the committees. Demand that they begin impeachment proceedings against Torricelli. The time has come for the American people to speak up and remind the crooks in Washington that the power they wield comes from us.
